Willie first learned to play the guitar at the age of 5 with simple lessons from his father who taught him how to form the basic chords A through G. From then on, playing the guitar was a big hobby for Willie outside of school and sports. Self teaching himself songs by ear led the way for Willie to grab a solid grasp for playing songs on the guitar. At the age of 18, Willie became deeply inspired by the music of Mark Knopfler with Dire Straits and Lindsey Buckingham with Fleetwood Mac. While attending college, studying Mechanical Engineering, Willie decided that embarking on a rock and roll music career had to be done when he discovered his true musical talents. Willie has written and continues to write his own original material that has listeners comparing his sound to his influences and other well known musicians. Willie does not use a pick and, rather, uses the bare skin of his finger tips to finger pick. This allows for a more versatile sound and reveals more taste in his guitar playing technique. He also uses a bare hand strumming/slap technique from time to time. Willie’s finger work can be heard in almost every music line he writes and is especially present in his instrumental track titled “Ice Breaker”. In his songs that include vocals, Willie is playing the guitar/banjo and singing simultaneously. His track titled “Desert Run”, which happens to be the favorite according to his listeners, is a good example that proves his ability to finger pick his instrument and sing simultaneously. He does NOT use any machined sounds nor any special effects, just straight live finger work! His lyrics are written with influence from everyday experiences as well as fictional/artistic thoughts and ideas. Willie plays a 6 string acoustic guitar, both metal string and nylon string. At age 23, Willie picked up a 5 string banjo. With his crisp and well developed finger work already established on the guitar, learning and self teaching himself the banjo came naturally. He began to write his instrumental tune titled "Black Widow" within 10 minutes of first picking up the banjo. As many other banjo players play a bluegrass style of banjo, Willie digs deep to find a harder and darker rock type of sound. A 6 string electric guitar also gets worked into the cycle of instrument use. Since the spring of 2004, Willie has been non stop, performing showcases at music venues, festivals, and party functions with his original music all over the United States (all 50 States covered to date!!!). He's in pursuit of touring international with his live performance. Willie manages to distribute his CD to everyone in attendance at every performance. The CD consists of 16 original tracks with both his solo work and collaborations with other musicians. So far, Willie has released approximately 30,000 CDs to the public and he won’t be stopping anytime soon. His music is also available for digital download in iTunes, amazon.com, and at many other websites of music distribution. Willie performs 100% live, both solo and with other musicians.....

Former football player gives dream of music career a shot

By Meredith Wade

POWAY – Willie Ames grew up with a football in one hand and a guitar in the other. Now 25, the former quarterback at Poway High School has given up sports in his pursuit of a music career.

Ames sings, writes music, and plays the guitar and banjo. He was one of the local musicians featured at the Poway Chamber of Commerce's second annual Character Rocks! Street Fair on Nov. 12.

“Playing here in my hometown was great,” Ames said. “Having people come up and say 'Oh, this is what you are doing now,' was a good feeling.”

The Poway street fair was a brief stop on Ames' tour of the western United States.

Since 2004, Ames has driven so many miles he has lost count. The scenery of Colorado, Oregon and all the states in between has become familiar territory for the aspiring musician as he travels to and from performances.

“Being by myself in the car on the open road is one of the most enjoyable parts of my life,” he said. “I come up with a lot of good music as I watch the environment fly by.”

Ames writes the music in his head while he drives and sings it to himself to memorize it. He said he has been composing music that way since he was 5 and his parents gave him a child's guitar for Christmas.

Ames studied mechanical engineering at the University of Arizona before realizing that music was his passion.

“I had concentrated so much on sports growing up, I never really realized how important music was in my life,” he said. “Then I turned 18 and it just hit me. I figured the dream was worth a shot.”

Ames will play for money or for the experience. The most important thing to him is that he can play at all.

“I am just breaking even monetarily now,” he said. “But I am having the time of my life. My goal is to try to play somewhere every night.”

Ames gives each audience member a copy of his CD and accepts donations rather than charging a fee. He estimates that he has handed out more than 20,000 CDs since recording his debut. He believes that first come the fans, then comes the fame.

Sometimes, Ames said, he needs a shot of vodka to calm his nerves before he goes onstage. “It gets easier the more shows I do, though,” he said. “The excitement and the adrenaline rush get me pretty fired up.”

Ames can't read music, but he said his ears are his guide. He cites Mark Knopfler with Dire Straits and Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac as his greatest musical influences.

Ames emulates his musical heroes in the way he plays the guitar. He strums the strings rather than using a pick, creating a sound he describes as more versatile and requiring more technique. “My music is mellow classic rock with words that are deep,” he said.

Ames has 16 original songs on his album, including “Ice Breaker,” “Desert Run” and “She'll Come Around.”

He will play shows in Las Vegas and Phoenix before returning to San Diego County to perform Dec. 23 at Hot Java Cafe, 11738 Carmel Mountain Road.

original post
